Watanabe-Tei

Sekikawa Village

Let's walk around a wealthy merchant's house while imagining those days.

In Sekikawa Village, there used to be the Watanabe family, a wealthy merchant and farmer who made a fortune in the Sake brewing industry, shipping business, and the development of rice fields. Now, their house is open to the public. The current main building was built at the end of the Edo period, it is more than 200 years old. The craftsmanship of Miyadaiku (carpenter) made of wooden frames is still alive and well. The Japanese garden of Kyoto Enshu style is splendid and you can see the beautiful scenery of each season from the hall. There are 6 storehouses on the site, old cherry trees and carp swimming in the outer moat. The guide (only Japanese) gives explanations about Watanabe-Tei for free on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, so why don't you ask them about the origin of the Watanabe family and the building? The explanation of the guide is 2 times, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
